Watch for an unstressed vowel that is hard to hear. Often misspelled as shoud or shoul.

Same family: shall, would, could, must, ought. If you can spell one, the shared part carries to the others.

Where it comes from: “Should” comes from Old English “sceolde,” the past form of “sceal,” which became modern “shall.” Over time, English speakers began using “should” mostly to talk about advice, duty, or what is recommended, rather than just the past of “shall.”
