How to spell into

What it means: To the inside of something.

The part people get wrong

Watch for an unstressed vowel that is hard to hear. Often misspelled as in to or ento.

Same family: in, inside, within, intoing (nonstandard, but sometimes seen as an error), inside of. If you can spell one, the shared part carries to the others.

Where it comes from: “Into” comes from Old English “into,” formed from “in” + “to,” and it has been written as a single word for many centuries. Modern learners sometimes still separate it as “in to,” but that usually changes the meaning in a sentence.
