The part people get wrong

Watch for a silent l, and an unstressed vowel that is hard to hear. Often misspelled as woud or whould.

Where it comes from: “Would” comes from Old English “wolde,” the past form of “willan,” meaning “to want” or “to wish.” Over time, it changed from mainly expressing desire to being a common helping verb for polite requests and imaginary situations.
