How to spell once

The part people get wrong

Watch for an unstressed vowel that is hard to hear. Often misspelled as ones or wonce.

Same family: one, only, first, single, formerly. If you can spell one, the shared part carries to the others.

Where it comes from: “Once” comes from Middle English forms like “ones,” which literally meant “one time.” Over time, the spelling and pronunciation changed, and it also gained the meaning of “formerly,” as in “once famous.”
