Same family: starts, started, starting, restart, starter. If you can spell one, the shared part carries to the others.

Where it comes from: “Start” comes from Old English *styrtan*, meaning ‘to leap up’ or ‘move suddenly,’ which is why we still use it to talk about both beginning something and jumping in surprise (to “startle”). Over time, its meaning shifted from physical jumping to the more general idea of beginning.
