The part people get wrong

Watch for an unstressed vowel that is hard to hear. Often misspelled as sum or som.

Sounds like, but is not: sum. Same sound, different spelling and meaning.

Same family: somewhat, somehow, someone, somebody, something. If you can spell one, the shared part carries to the others.

Where it comes from: Some comes from Old English "sum," meaning "a certain one" or "a particular amount." It is related to the same root that gives us "same" and even the mathematical word "sum."
