The part people get wrong

Watch for an unstressed vowel that is hard to hear. Often misspelled as won or oen.

Sounds like, but is not: won. Same sound, different spelling and meaning.

Same family: only, once, alone, someone, anyone. If you can spell one, the shared part carries to the others.

Where it comes from: The word "one" comes from Old English "ān," which meant both "one" and "only." Over time, English speakers also began using it informally as an intensifier, as in "one big mess" or "one crazy day."
