Where it comes from: The word “zipper” comes from the sound it makes—an imitation like “zip!”—and was popularized in the early 1900s by the B.F. Goodrich Company for a new kind of fastener on boots and rubber boots. Before that, similar devices were often called “slide fasteners.”
