How to spell writing

hear itwrit·ing/'raɪtɪŋ/verbSilent and tricky

What it means: To form letters, words, or symbols on a surface.

In a sentence: I am writing a letter to my best friend.

The part people get wrong

Often misspelled as writting or riting.

Same family: writer, written, rewriting, handwriting. If you can spell one, the shared part carries to the others.

Where it comes from: Writing comes from the Old English verb *writan*, which originally meant “to score, scratch, or draw” on a surface. Over time, it shifted to mean forming letters and words, which is why we still talk about ‘writing’ by hand even when we type on a keyboard.
