Often misspelled as with in or withen.

Same family: inside, indoors, internal, inner, inside of. If you can spell one, the shared part carries to the others.

Where it comes from: “Within” comes from Old English “wiðinnan,” a combination of words meaning ‘against’ or ‘toward’ plus ‘inward.’ Over time, its meaning narrowed to the simple idea of being on the inside or occurring before a certain point in time.
