How to spell weight
What it means: The heaviness of an object.
In a sentence: The elephant's weight makes the ground shake.
The part people get wrong
Watch for the order of ei. Often misspelled as wait or weigth.
Sounds like, but is not: wait. Same sound, different spelling and meaning.
Same family: weigh, overweight, underweight, lightweight, midweight. If you can spell one, the shared part carries to the others.
Where it comes from: Weight comes from Old English 'wiht' or 'gewiht', related to the verb 'weigh.' Both go back to a Proto-Germanic root meaning 'to lift or carry,' which is why the spelling still shows the older 'gh' even though we no longer pronounce it.
