Where it comes from: Fifteenth comes from the Old English words "fīftiēne" (fifteen) and the ending "-tha" used to form ordinal numbers. Over time, the spelling and pronunciation changed, but the -th ending still marks it as an order number, like fourth, tenth, and twentieth.
