Where it comes from: “Almost” comes from Old English *ealmǣst*, meaning “nearly, all but,” formed from “all” plus “most.” Over time, the spelling and pronunciation changed slightly, but the idea of being “not quite” the whole way has stayed the same for over a thousand years.
