How to spell allude

hear ital·lude/ə'lud/verbHidden vowels

What it means: To make a disguised reference.

In a sentence: The teacher may allude to a hint hidden in the book.

The part people get wrong

Watch for double l. Often misspelled as elude or allood.

Same family: allusion, allusive, allusively, refer, hint. If you can spell one, the shared part carries to the others.

Where it comes from: “Allude” comes from the Latin verb “alludere,” meaning “to play with” or “to joke about,” so when you allude to something, you are almost ‘playing around’ the idea instead of naming it directly.
